As a proud Native Hawaiian Organization (NHO), K2 is honored to be part of a community committed to cultural preservation, community empowerment, and economic opportunity. But what exactly is an NHO, and why does it matter?
Under the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), Native Hawaiian Organizations are nonprofit entities eligible to participate in the 8(a) Business Development Program. NHOs play a vital role in supporting Native Hawaiian communities through job creation, reinvestment, and culturally informed leadership.
But the benefits and responsibilities of an NHO go far beyond status alone. One of the most impactful aspects of being an NHO is the ability to receive sole-source contracts from the federal government.
Sole-Source Contracting Authority: A Strategic Advantage for a Native Hawaiian Organization
NHOs can receive:
Up to $25 million in sole-source contracts (or more, with justification)
Up to $100 million in sole-source contracts within the Department of Defense (DoD)
This means NHOs can be awarded contracts without going through the traditional competitive bidding process, enabling faster procurement and mission delivery. For agencies like the DoD, this provides a streamlined and responsive contracting mechanism, especially for time-sensitive or critical needs.|
